LSBU Business School are pleased to present a third instalment of its Professional Lecture Series. When lockdown began last year, we maintained our commitment to address the learning needs of our staff, students, local business communities & beyond by delivering a series of virtual lectures with the aim of providing professional training & insights. Given that we are still operating remotely and following on from the success of last year's lectures, colleagues from LSBU's Business School have come together to develop an insightful & engaging new programme to carry us through to summer 2021.
An opportunity open to all, and with the broad business community with whom we are engaged in mind, our aim is to support the community and facilitate networks, especially in light of how the pandemic has affected so many business owners. This is reflected in many of the topics we will be addressing.
'Data in funny places' with Dr . Sara Abdaless, Head of Division - Accounting, Finance & Economics, LSBU
Description: Universities contribute more than £95 billion to the UK economy (Universities UK, 2020) and are a major contributor to the job market, their local communities and society (both present and future). Universities have been leading the debate around sustainability through their research facilities and been producing sustainability reports as an organisation for years. Many universities also have sustainability managers, take part in various sustainability league tables and initiatives, however, is it enough? Sustainability is often seen as a separate matter to the core business and as a fancy ad-hoc function, with a special focus on the Environmental side of it or even the financial one, depending on who in the organisation or the sector we speak to. The real change, that is needed to make our universities more sustainable, is adopting a wholistic approach to the term, a focus on normalising the term sustainability or even scrapping it all together. This lecture will discuss how universities need to rethink their sustainability and potential frameworks that can be used to facilitate that transition.
