'Who wants the high street of the future anyhow?' - Dr Charles Graham
Description: A great deal of commentary about the state of the high street starts out (rightly) by highlighting declining footfall, rising vacancies, and the terrifying debt and uncertainty now weighing on independent traders. If we are to have high streets at all, two futures are quite commonly described. The first extrapolates from the rapid rise of digital technologies. This future is connected and “smart”; an ultra-convenient physical location where check-out free stores and augmented reality webrooms interact through hand-held devices. The second vision argues that since the most familiar brand names have shut up shop, all high streets no longer look the same. Making a virtue of necessity, the best strategy is differentiation. High streets should identify and promote their unique attributes to compete for greater footfall.
In this lecture I compare these two future visions with the reality on the ground, recently captured by London South Bank University from extensive observation and interviews on ten high streets across the London Borough of Lewisham. Neither stands up entirely, and some alternatives will be proposed, which I hope may be of interest to anyone interested in a sustainable future for independent high street retail.
